London Rooms – Where to stay in London

We have been fortunate enough to visit London in the United Kingdom many times while crisscrossing our way around Europe. In that time we have stayed in many London Rooms and managed to stumble on to great deals including 5 star hotels. Although these deals don’t come along every day, they are there you just have to do your research.

London Rooms

We book all our hotels online, and have found London rooms on booking.com, a site that we believe gives the best deals and we have been using them for a number of years for accommodation.

One thing you will realise when researching Hotels in central London is that they aren’t cheap. Most rooms are small and showing signs of age. These are the sacrifices you have to make for a central location, so don’t expect the Hilton (unless you get a deal like we did).

Olympic House Hotel

Olympic House Hotel is situated at 138-140 Sussex Gardens Paddington. We chose Olympic House hotel for the price, as it is a budget hotel.

The rooms are very small with only one chair to sit on so if you are going as a couple one has to sit on the bed, the bathroom was snug and depending on how big your luggage is only 1 bag will fit in the closet.

Though small, the room was very clean and perfect if all you want is a bed after a day of sightseeing. Sussex Gardens is a very long street of small hotels such as Olympic House so you have many to choose from if you are happy with this location.

Advantages…Access from Heathrow Airport via the Heathrow Express, close to Paddington tube and train station, walking distance to many attractions, shopping and dining options, free Wifi.

Comfort level…Good, small clean rooms.

Norfolk Plaza Hotel

Norfolk Plaza Hotel is situated at 29/33 Norfolk Square Paddington.

We stayed here and were pleasantly surprised when they gave us a suite (we had booked a double room). With a lounge room downstairs and a bedroom and bathroom upstairs it was a huge change from the small size rooms we were used to.

Though showing a few signs of age, this room was very comfortable and could accommodate a family if needed.

Hilton London Paddington

Hilton London Paddington is situated at Paddington Rail and Underground Station. We stumbled upon a deal that included breakfast when one of our flights from Hong Kong got bumped forward a day. The room wasn’t huge but it was luxurious, the staff were lovely, the breakfast delicious and we enjoyed using the gym, we were thoroughly spoiled.

Getting To Paddington

Getting to Paddington couldn’t be easier! The Heathrow Express  takes you from Heathrow Airport to Paddington Railway Station in 15 minutes, a blessing after a 24 hour flight from Australia.

Olympic House Hotel, Norfolk Plaza Hotel and the Hilton London Paddington are all within walking distance to Paddington Tube and Train Station.

What to do around Paddington

If you enjoy walking you will love this area. We spent many early mornings strolling through Hyde Park, before heading on to other attractions such as Hard Rock Cafe, Harrods and Buckingham Palace.

Continuing up the Mall to Trafalgar Square, you can visit the National Gallery  and National Portrait Gallery and walk on to Leicester Square where you can book a West End Show.

The London Underground (Tube)

If you don’t want to walk, all attractions can be reached by the London Underground, commonly known as the Tube.

The tube is a quick way to get to many of London’s famous tourist attractions. From Big Ben and the Houses of Parliment, Westminster Abbey (which for any History buff is a must), to the Sherlock Holmes Museum, Madame Tussauds, the Tower of London and the Imperial War Museum all can be reached from Paddington Tube Station.

The Buckingham Hotel

The Buckingham Hotel is situated at 39-40 Bedford Place in the heart of Bloomsbury.

The room was fitted with its own small kitchette and is ideal for the budget conscious. The rooms are very large by London standards and very elegant in design. The cosy breakfast room serves a delicious breakfast and service was outstanding. We really enjoyed our stay at this Hotel.

Advantages…Access to Heathrow Airport via Piccadilly Underground line, close to Underground Stations, close to attractions, dining and entertainment, free Wifi.

Comfort level…Very Good, clean rooms, helpful and welcoming Staff.

Getting Around Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury is a convenient area if you want to be close to the British Museum, Covent Garden, St Pauls Cathedral (again a must for History buffs), the Victoria Embankment and to all the Thames River Cruises.

The Bloomsbury area features restaurants and pubs, but if you would like to use the kitchenette there is a Tesco Express at Russell Square.

We took a shuttle bus from Heathrow airport to get to the hotel, but you can take the Piccadilly tube line from Heathrow and get off at Russell Square, this option saves money but check the website to make sure the line isn’t being repaired as it was the weekend we arrived.

Gatwick Airport

Hilton London Gatwick Airport Hotel

The Hilton London Gatwick Airport Hotel is a convenient Hotel for those early morning flights out of Gatwick Airport in London.

Rooms are clean, modern and quiet with comfortable bed and pillows that make for a restful night’s sleep. In the lobby you will find restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

Hilton London Gatwick Airport Hotel can be reached from central London by taking the Gatwick Express from Victoria Station. Trains run every 15 minutes between 05:00 and 20:45 with an average journey time of 30 minutes.
